Make a color-reference strip
Arrange a few paper colors from light to dark and label their source. Place the strip beside your sketch to compare emphasis. Keep the sample with the finished study so you can understand later decisions.
Keep the finished note with its date and source material. Return to it when you repeat the exercise, and add what changed rather than replacing the earlier observation.
